This article explains how long equipment financing lasts and how to match the term to the working life of the asset, for Terre Haute and Vigo County owners: what partners consider, used equipment, comparing two terms with our calculator, early payoff and lien release. Brookmont Funding, a small-business funding broker in Terre Haute, Indiana, provides it as general information; partners set terms.
The rule of thumb: the term should end before the usefulness does
Equipment financing is repaid out of the money the equipment helps earn. If the term runs past the point where the equipment is worn out, obsolete or replaced, the business ends up paying for two machines at once. If the term is much shorter than the equipment's useful life, payments are higher than they need to be and squeeze cash flow early on.
What partners consider when setting a term
- The kind of equipment: heavy, durable equipment holds its value longer than technology that dates quickly.
- New or used: used equipment has less life left, so terms are often shorter.
- Resale value: partners want the balance to stay below what the equipment could be sold for.
- The business: time in business, cash flow and credit all affect what a partner will offer.
- The structure: a loan, a lease and an equipment finance agreement can carry different terms for the same item.
We do not quote term ranges; every partner sets its own. Our equipment financing page explains the three structures.
Practices and kitchens in Vigo County, Indiana
Health care and social assistance had more employer establishments than any other sector in Vigo County in 2023, 425, including 33 dental offices and 76 physician offices; restaurants and other eating places numbered 195 (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). The two sectors face the term question differently.
Clinical technology, such as imaging and practice software, can be replaced for reasons other than wear, so practices often choose shorter terms or leases for it, and longer terms for chairs, cabinetry and sterilization equipment. Medical and dental practice financing goes into more detail. A kitchen's heavy cooking equipment and refrigeration tend to last, while POS hardware dates quickly.
Comparing two terms
Run the same purchase at two different terms and compare the totals, not just the monthly payments. Our company vehicle payment calculator works for any financed purchase with a price, down payment, rate and term: it returns the monthly payment and the total cost including the down payment. Enter one term, note the results, then enter the second.
The longer term will show a lower payment and a higher total cost. The question is whether the lower payment is worth the extra total, and whether the equipment will still be working when the last payment is made.
Paying off early
Some equipment loans can be paid off early with interest saved; others carry prepayment terms that reduce or remove the saving, and many leases do not allow early payoff on simple terms. Read the prepayment clause before choosing a long term on the assumption that you will pay it off sooner.
Signs a term is too long
- The equipment is usually replaced before the last scheduled payment
- The balance would exceed what the equipment could be sold for in the middle years
- A major repair is likely before the financing ends
- The technology inside is updated every few years
If two or more apply, a shorter term or a lease is worth pricing alongside.
When the financing ends
At the end of an equipment loan or EFA, the business owns the equipment outright, but the partner's lien does not always disappear by itself. The UCC filing made at the start may stay on record until it lapses or is terminated. Our Indiana UCC guide explains how to check, which matters the next time you finance anything.
For larger projects that mix equipment with a build-out, a term loan may be the better comparison. Other Brookmont articles are collected on the blog.
